Netherlands-based indie studio Bjenssen has officially released its first commercial game, a real-time strategy title called Counter Clash, which has just entered Early Access on Steam. Developed solo, the game draws heavy inspiration from genre classics like Battle for Middle Earth and Age of Empires. It also marks the debut of indie publisher The CoLab, a new label aiming to make the publishing scene fairer and more collaborative, with a strong focus on supporting solo developers.
The game aims to deliver a more accessible strategy experience, with faster matches and simplified mechanics for city building, upgrades, and troop control—allowing players to focus on tactical gameplay. Featuring hand-drawn visuals and a nostalgic, retro vibe, it evokes the golden age of 1990s strategy games while introducing a fresh, modern twist.
Players can choose from several factions, each offering unique playstyles, heroes, and resource management systems. Launch factions include Monceaux, a religious kingdom of knights with powerful healing abilities; Fahad, a nomadic culture wielding elemental forces with fast and deadly units; and URA, a republic of scientists focused on tactical superiority and heavy firepower.
The game boasts over 30 different types of units and tactical mechanics that let players use the environment to their advantage. Whether building a fortified empire, launching hit-and-run raids, or training a hero to become a one-person army, there’s a strategy for every style of play.
Another key feature is its handcrafted campaigns tailored to each faction, with missions that highlight their unique traits. Players will follow the stories of a paranoid king, a lost shaman, and a grumpy general as they navigate ever-shifting alliances and epic battles.
According to Mark Faulkner, Head of Production at The CoLab, "Counter Clash is an every-person RTS at first glance that quickly transforms into a multi-layered tactical conundrum that will keep you entertained for days. It's one of those superb games you can pick up in 10 seconds, have fun in 10 minutes, or dive into for hours."
