Although it is a social deduction and psychological horror game focused on investigation and paranoia at an isolated Antarctic research station, Deep Frost explores resource management mechanics and survival systems that demand the player's close attention. Scheduled for release on October 27, the game already has a free demo available on Steam, allowing players to experience the first three days of the campaign, which ends after Night 3. Developed and published by Aeon Games Canada, the title places twelve researchers in an extreme situation where an unknown threat can assume the appearance of any one of them. With up to nine days to uncover the mystery, every decision can affect relationships among the survivors and compromise their chances of discovering who is infected.
The investigation relies on the ability to interrogate researchers, examine station records, and compare different accounts of events. Collected information can be organized in a case dossier and a field notebook, helping players track evidence and identify contradictions in testimonies. However, inconsistencies do not necessarily mean someone is infected, requiring caution before turning suspicions into accusations.
Meetings between researchers introduce social decisions that go beyond simply choosing a suspect. Players can publicly accuse someone, defend a person they still have doubts about, or choose to keep their theories to themselves. Public statements and votes are separate decisions, while other characters may react based on what they have witnessed or learned about each participant's actions.
Maintaining the station also affects the course of the investigation, as equipment failures pose additional risks to everyone involved. Identifying problems and deciding how to resolve them requires players to manage resources and assess priorities as distrust grows. Even when a repair is successfully completed, resolving a technical issue does not eliminate suspicions surrounding the researchers, keeping the pressure between survival and investigation.
The ability to replay expeditions adds variety to the situations encountered throughout the campaign. Each playthrough brings together twelve researchers randomly selected from a roster of 48 characters, with different hidden roles, events, and relationships. Players can work alongside the investigative team, attempting to identify the infection, or take on the role of Thaw, seeking to divert suspicion and undermine the efforts of others. This structure combines careful observation, uncertainty, and social decisions to create different experiences with each attempt.
The free demo introduces the campaign's core mechanics over the first three days, including a practice vote on Day 1. The full experience progresses to additional mechanics, such as blood tests, new threats within the station, and an extraction phase. Playtime varies depending on reading speed and the decisions made during the investigation, giving players an opportunity to experience the dynamics of suspicion before the game's scheduled release on October 27.
