Clumsy Bear Studio has announced the arrival of Hungry Horrors in Steam Early Access, a card based adventure game inspired by British and Irish folklore, in which players must keep terrifying creatures well fed using traditional regional dishes. There is no combat, as every card played represents a meal served, and each turn revolves around satisfying a Horror before it reaches the player. The concept transforms the usual tension of confrontations into a strategic race against the creatures’ hunger.
The developer has also secured several promotional bundles at launch, allowing players who already own titles such as Backpack Hero, Deck of Haunts, Dice and Fold, Dwarves Glory, Death and Loot, Into The Grid, and Luck Be a Landlord to receive additional discounts. This initiative broadens the game’s reach and rewards those who already follow productions from the same indie ecosystem on Steam.
In Early Access, the initial version will feature five playable biomes, including caves, woods, bogs, meadows, and the town, as well as the dungeon and the kitchen. There will be 20 Horrors drawn from British and Irish myth, such as Dullahan, Jenny Greenteeth, and Queen Mab, along with 42 dishes based on real traditional recipes from Britain and Ireland. The content also includes eight legendary characters to encounter, among them Herne the Hunter and the Wulver.
The core progression system takes place through the Book of Taliesin, which unlocks new mechanics and strengthens future runs. Items such as seasonings, cookware, potions, and artefacts change how the game is played, while each Horror has a unique fatality animation. The initial package also brings five original music tracks composed by Henry Taylor, Easter eggs, Steam achievements, hidden interactions, and full controller support, as well as mouse only and keyboard only play modes.
In the narrative, the player takes on the role of a spoilt princess, forced into action when a ravenous curse spreads across her kingdom and a dragon awakens at its heart. To save the land, she must perfect her cooking skills and feed the Horrors drawn from British and Irish legend, always under the supervision of a sharp tongued, sarcastic cat who comments on every step of the journey.
Each encounter is focused on feeding the creatures, balancing hunger levels, flavour cravings, and taste chains, while upgrading dishes with seasonings. Cookware, spices, and artefacts collected along the way reshape each run, while events and legendary characters appear to enrich progression. All Horrors, NPCs, and artefacts are rooted in regional folklore, and every dish is based on an authentic recipe, many of which can still be found in pubs today.
Blending turn based strategy with a strong sense of place, Hungry Horrors features colourful 90s inspired pixel art and is accompanied by an original, whimsical score by Henry Taylor. During Early Access, player feedback will continue to shape development, with regular updates adding new areas, creatures, dishes, and narrative elements over time.
