Melbourne-based Barrel Smash Studios has announced that its upcoming game Oceaneers will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam on April 13, 2026. The premise places players in a flooded world filled with unstable islands, where survival and management go hand in hand.
The title blends survival, crafting, and colony simulation elements, challenging players to build their base while scavenging debris, crafting equipment, and training survivors. Throughout the journey, it will be possible to construct rafts, fend off sharks, explore island bunkers, and uncover lost technologies known as Float Tech from an old-world corporation.
Despite the tropical setting, island life is far from peaceful, as scarce resources and limited space demand careful planning. Players must organize workstations, manage food production, and secure drinkable water, all while ensuring their colony remains afloat above the rising sea.
According to developer James Thomas, "We're entering Early Access with a huge amount of content already in the game, and players can experience the full story from day one," he shared, adding that "Player feedback has been a big part of getting the game to this level of polish, so we're excited to enter the next phase and keep expanding it together with the community."
The experience is centered on a single player mode, where players can control multiple characters, each with their own traits. It will also be possible to design various rafts and send survivors on expeditions, expanding the strategic depth of the gameplay.
Another highlight is the colony expansion system, which allows players to haul entire islands back to their base, increasing available space. In addition, contraptions can be used to improve buoyancy, ensuring greater stability amid environmental challenges.
Among other features, the game includes a research system to unlock advanced workstations, survival against weather events and threats on land and sea, crop farming, meal preparation, and extensive survivor customization, including names, traits, and visual styles. The narrative also deepens as players progress, revealing secrets of the ocean and the submerged history behind this world.
