The cooperative dark fantasy adventure Silk & Sorrow, the debut title from Snowberry Games, follows two orphaned children who must survive in the Chrysalis, a hidden and decaying world where everything humanity discards or forgets ends up, including memories, emotions, and people. Developed over two years by an independent two-person team based in Antwerp, Belgium, the project embraces a distinctive visual identity built entirely from hand-drawn environments, creatures, and animations.
The death of the Sun Queen, an enormous glowworm that gave purpose to everything that fell into the Chrysalis, sets the world’s decline in motion. Without the light of its former guardian, the inhabitants and elements she transformed begin to forget their original purposes as corruption spreads through abandoned landscapes. The protagonists arrive in this underground world amid these circumstances, facing a reality where darkness threatens to consume what little remains.
Cooperation between two players forms the foundation of the experience, with options for both local and online play. The protagonists must divide responsibilities and coordinate their actions to navigate dangerous areas, explore unusual ecosystems, and solve environmental puzzles. Since survival depends on communication and mutual trust, each player must consider their partner’s limitations when deciding how to progress through the environments.
The glowing creature Glint plays a central role in exploration, serving as a companion to the protagonists and their primary source of light in the darkness. Since Glint can only occupy one location at a time, one character must carry the creature while the other operates without illumination, creating situations in which coordination between players becomes essential. The small grub can also be fed fireflies to strengthen its glow and unlock special abilities that expand the possibilities available throughout the journey.
Glint’s creation stemmed from a change in the project’s original concept, as explained by Mano, game designer at Snowberry Games: "Glint started as a normal lantern. Then we thought, what if the thing helping these children survive was actually another creature they could care for? That small change ended up becoming one of the most important parts of the game." The decision to transform a conventional light source into a creature that players can feed and strengthen added a layer of care to the cooperative mechanics, connecting progression to the relationship established with their companion.
The journey also involves confronting creatures lurking in dark areas and meeting peculiar characters who have built their lives among humanity’s discarded remnants. Exploration combines these challenges with the discovery of landscapes made up of discarded objects, neglected memories, and forgotten emotions, reinforcing the connection between the fantasy setting and the elements that shaped the Chrysalis.
