The independent studio Ao Norte, based in Galicia, Spain, has announced a partnership with publisher Acclaim Inc. to bring Die or Die to Steam and consoles in 2027. Following its playable debut at L.A. Comic Con last week, the title has officially received a release announcement, accompanied by a new trailer showcasing its fast-paced action, hand-drawn enemies, and dice-based special abilities.

Featuring a top-down perspective and intense combat, the game combines the irreverent cartoon aesthetic of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters with the frenetic action of Hotline Miami. Players take control of Lil' Demon, a character tired of his routine and job as a taxi driver who decides to abandon the city and leave his old life behind. However, the journey to the coast is filled with obstacles, turning his attempted escape into an adventure packed with confrontations and unpredictable situations.

The gameplay follows the structure of a top-down roguelike shooter, in which players must run, shoot, and dodge enemy attacks to survive each level. Dice play a central role in progression, allowing players to unlock special abilities, acquire powerful weapons, or eliminate specific threats. Every decision influences the available abilities and even the layout of the levels, requiring players to carefully manage their resources as they advance.

The so-called Bummers add another layer of unpredictability to encounters by introducing modifiers that change the conditions of each run. Examples include gigantic enemies, opponents capable of attacking other foes, reduced movement speed, floors transformed into lava, and meteor showers. Each threat has its own requirements for elimination, adding strategic decisions to the action and demanding constant adaptation.

The campaign will feature five different worlds filled with enemies, traps, and hazards that must be overcome before reaching the final destination. Dice management also introduces a dilemma during each run, as resources spent eliminating obstacles are no longer available for purchasing equipment or developing abilities. As a result, success depends not only on combat precision but also on the ability to manage resources and build an effective setup.

The partnership was welcomed by Rubén Calles, Producer and Art Director at Ao Norte, who highlighted the team's expectations for the collaboration with the publisher. "The whole Ao Norte team is so excited about this partnership! Getting to work with Acclaim will definitely put Die or Die among the most renowned games ever. Not a single bummer in our roadmap, Our dice roll says it's just over the top powers and full throttle towards success for us!"

Marc Anthony Rodriguez, Director of Publishing & Strategic Partnerships at Acclaim, also discussed the game's connection to the publisher's identity, highlighting its influences from alternative animation of the 1990s. "Growing up, shows like Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and Liquid Television had a wild, weird, unapologetic energy you couldn't find anywhere else. Die or Die captures that same cartoon chaos, which makes it a perfect fit for Acclaim. That's what we're about: games with attitude, personality, and immediate fun."
